Role Models

Everyone has a hero or someone they look up to. They could be in your desired field or someone you just admire. This person can teach you a lot and give you insight on your own life. I believe it's very important to have a mentor because it makes less room for trial and error on your part. In some sense, it's too dangerous to learn from your own mistakes, so you might as well learn from others'. Having a mentor or role model gives you that luxury, especially if they want to see you do good. Rappers, models, athletes, and other celebrities can be a source of inspiration, but when it comes to being a role model, you are better off with someone you can have a real relationship with. You can't look up to someone who you don't know personally because that person could unknowingly lead you down the wrong path. They don't know you, and they are doing what's best for them, and that is not necessarily what's best for you.

Even though having a mentor or role model in your life is important, being a mentor/ role model to younger people is critical, especially in today's society. I know the media is such a big deal to younger kids, and I want to make sure that they know everything they see on TV is not real life. They need someone to tell them that those models are airbrushed and Photoshopped and that the jewelry their favorite rapper is wearing is borrowed because he's probably not going to blow $100,000 on a necklace. Who else better to show them how real life works other than you? You can start with your own family, or "adopt" a little sister/brother through a youth program. You may have to tighten up some loose ends in your own life, and take down those drunken tweets and Instagram pictures. However, in the end you will not only become a better person, but you will help create a better generation. That to me is priceless.

So here is a challenge for you. Find a young person to "adopt" and take them under your wing and teach them the finer things of life. It may seem like something small, but it could make a huge impact on the world and the next generation to come. Think about it like this, even the President had a role model he looked up to, and a person who helped contribute to his success. In the future, wouldn't it be amazing to say that you were the mentor of a successful person and that you helped guide them to be the person that the are now? It's simply fulfilling, and it's something that everyone should feel at least once in their lifetime.
