A Lethal equation: D(E+P)=S

“Pain is temporary. It may last a minute, or an hour, or a day, or a year, but eventually it will subside and something else will take its place. If I quit, however, it lasts forever.”
- Lance Armstrong
This quote from Lance Armstrong says a lot of things. It demonstrates his endurance (E), his passion (P), and his determination (D). Although it's good to have at least one of those qualities, the combination of all three make for a lethal equation that, with hard work, will eventually launch anyone into success (S) --hence the above formula D(E+P)=S.

Sometimes when we are in pain we feel like it's never going to end. We feel as if the world is going to come crashing down on our shoulders. We need endurance, the (E) part of this equation, if we plan on finishing the race to success. Even though it seems like it will last forever, it won't. The only type of pain that does last forever is regret. Successful people already know that, and they would rather suffer temporarily than to quit and suffer eternally. Things are usually the most difficult to bear when victory is right around the corner. However, so many people never get to that point because they allow the pain to take over and force them to quit. That's why quitters never win, and winners never quit. Enduring through the struggle will ensure that you at least finish what you started.

The second part of this formula is passion (P). David was talking (more like lecturing) to me about having such a passion that being considered "good" and doing work that's just "good" isn't good enough. He gave me an example of Kobe Bryant. If Kobe were to score 25 points in a game, he would most likely be pissed. Now 25 points for a player in a game is good; however, for a man who has made an extraordinary 81 points in a game before, it isn't like him to just settle with a "good" 25 points. 25 points isn't good enough because his passion says it isn't. I learned from his example that I'm suppose to be Kobe, and I should never settle for less than excellent when it comes to the work that I do.

Now the last part of the equation is D, which obviously stands for determination. Now if you look at the entire equation, and you know something about math, then you know that in this situation D has to be multiplied to both E and P in order to produce S. That's because no matter what you do you have to have determination. If you are not determined, then you don't really care what happens. You won't need passion or endurance because you're not really commanding success. It would be more or less just an option to you. You and I both know that when something is optional, we won't do it. Therefore we have to make it a requirement, and that's where determination comes in.

Not one person who worked for their success got there without wanting it. Both Lance Armstrong and Kobe Bryant have loads of it, and without it they would be nowhere. They have the formula for success, and they, along with other people, use it daily. Don't just use it when you have a goal that you want to reach, use it in everything that you do! There is only one answer that the formula can yield, and that is success, but it's up to you to solve it.
