Inspiration With Words

I know why the caged bird sings by Maya Angelou
A free bird leaps on the back
Of the wind and floats downstream
Till the current ends and dips his wing
In the orange suns rays
And dares to claim the sky.

But a BIRD that stalks down his narrow cage
Can seldom see through his bars of rage
His wings are clipped and his feet are tied
So he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings with a fearful trill
Of things unknown but longed for still
And his tune is heard on the distant hill for
The caged bird sings of freedom.

The free bird thinks of another breeze
And the trade winds soft through
The sighing trees
And the fat worms waiting on a dawn-bright
Lawn and he names the sky his own.

But a caged BIRD stands on the grave of dreams
His shadow shouts on a nightmare scream
His wings are clipped and his feet are tied
So he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings with
A fearful trill of things unknown
But longed for still and his
Tune is heard on the distant hill
For the caged bird sings of freedom.
Someone else's words can bring about change and renewal to one's mind. If you breakdown and analyze the meaning of each line, you may even come across an epiphany about your own life. That's kind of what this poem did for me the first time I read it around 8 years ago. I vowed from then on not to be a caged bird; I wanted to be the free one. Perhaps I owe my free spirited, always on 10 personality to this poem.Who knows what kind of person I would be had I not been so deeply touched and inspired by Maya Angelou's words. It was so major to me that it changed my thought process, as well as my life. I may not ever be as profound and as popular as her, but if I make an impression on the brain of at least one person then I am living my dreams, and I'm not the caged bird who merely sings.
